Therapy Animals & Recovery
Animals for Therapy?
At Twin Lakes Recovery Center, healing is about more than treatment plans. It’s about connection, safety, and learning how to be present again. Therapy animals play a meaningful role in supporting that process for many of our residents.
Animals offer something simple yet powerful: non-judgmental companionship. For individuals in addiction recovery, this can reduce anxiety, ease emotional distress, and help create a sense of calm during what is often a vulnerable time.
How Therapy Animals Support Recovery
Research and lived experience both show that interaction with therapy animals can support recovery in several important ways:
- Reduced stress and anxiety through calming physical presence
- Emotional regulation by helping residents stay grounded in the moment
- Increased feelings of safety and trust, especially for those who struggle to open up
- Improved mood and motivation, encouraging engagement in treatment
- Connection and responsibility, reinforcing healthy routines and empathy
For many people, bonding with an animal becomes a bridge—helping them reconnect with themselves and with others.
A Complement to Clinical Care
Therapy animals at Twin Lakes are not a replacement for clinical treatment, but a supportive addition to evidence-based care. Their presence enhances therapeutic work by creating an environment that feels more welcoming, less intimidating, and deeply human.
Moments spent with therapy animals often become moments of peace, reflection, and hope. These are reminders that recovery is possible and that healing doesn’t have to be faced alone.
At Twin Lakes, we believe recovery thrives in spaces where compassion, connection, and care are felt every day
